Executive Director, Hoosic River Watershed Association

General:

For more than 20 years, the Hoosic River Watershed Association (HooRWA) has championed restoration, conservation and enjoyment of the watershed through education, research, and advocacy. Under guidance from the Board, the Executive Director (ED) sets the tone and the substance for HooRWA, the major environmental organization serving the tri-state area of Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York.  The ED oversees all the operations of HooRWA, supervising two

permanent staff, a varying number of temporary staff and contractors and reports to the President of the HooRWA Board of Directors. HooRWA works best when it collaborates with government agencies, other NGOs, area colleges and schools to carry out its mission, and the ED is expected to cultivate these alliances.

 

Administration:

·        In consultation with the Board of Directors, develop an annual Work Plan.

·        Manage the day-to-day and longer term operations of the organization to achieve the goals of the organization and the specific actions described in the annual work plan.

·        Attended monthly meetings of the Board (September-June), submitting Executive Director’s Report and Monitoring Report for each meeting.

·        Prepare an annual budget in consultation with the Treasurer and oversee all financial operations. 

·        Facilitate the work of the Board through training and orientation, assisting in setting the direction for committee activities, and working with Board members individually and in groups to accomplish the goals of the organization.

 

Proposal Writing and Grant Administration

·        Seek out funding sources congruent with HooRWA’s mission.

·        Raise operating funds through grant proposals, foundation requests and the solicitation of private donations

·        Execute the terms of grants or foundation funds received.

 

Supervision

·        Supervise two regular employees, the Assistant Director and the Monitoring Coordinator.

·        In consultation with the Board, hire new staff to fill these positions when vacancies open.

·        Conduct an annual performance evaluation of regular staff.

·        Supervise employees who may be hired from time to time to execute grant, foundation or other activities.

·        Terminate staff in the event of unsatisfactory performance or in the event that the Board deems it necessary to reduce staff.

 

On-going Activities

·        Organize raft rides during the spring.

·        Oversee the production of at least two annual newsletters each spring.

·        Oversee the maintenance of the HooRWA Website.

 

Riverfest

·        In consultation with the Board, oversee all the planning and execution of HooRWA’s Riverfest each May.

·        Prepare and monitor a budget for this event.

·        Meet with the Board of Directors’ Riverfest Committee and coordinate their efforts to complete the various tasks required for this event.

Bike Ride

·        Assist the Bike Ride Coordinator in organizing this event each August.

·        Recruit Board members and other friends of HooRWA to assist with the various tasks necessary for this event.

 

Delegation

·        Because of HooRWA’s small staff, the Executive Director is encouraged to keep in close contact with the Board and to request assistance whenever necessary.

·        It may be desirable to delegate many of these tasks to the Assistant Director, Board Members, or other friends of HooRWA, but the Executive Director retains ultimate responsibility to see that they are all executed.

 

Time Commitment:  20hrs/week, 12 months/year

 

·        Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, public administration, business or field relevant to the management and operation of a nonprofit corporation.
  • Knowledge about and love of rivers.
  • Two years experience working in the nonprofit sector
  • Experience in supervising professional employees...
  • Proven ability to raise significant operating funds through grants, foundations or private donations. 
  • Ability to work with community and Board members. 
  • Clear self-direction, good leadership skills, and sense of humor.
